Life in Black and Grey

Everyone here wears dark colours all the time. This is another factor adding to the many reasons why I stick out as the foreigner I am, to be named and shamed in the street. As an avid supporter of colour, this wardrobe adjustment may prove difficult. Time will tell, at least it’s preparing me for the Parisian sartorial way – black on black on black, c’est chic. The choice of dark colours reflects and changes with the seasons. In spring and summer, colour is cracked out, but come those dark wintry days and nights, the Russians (or at least St Petersburgians) choose to dress in a way which allows them to disappear into their surroundings. Fantastic as it would be to advocate change by wearing my usual cheery palette, I think for now I’ll try to blend in.

I have also decided that even the way I sneeze is foreign. However, I was asked for directions in the street today, so maybe I am looking more Ruski as the days go by. I was flattered by his mistake and then blew it by saying (in Russian) “Yes, no here, no there!” to which I got a bemused look and we went our separate ways. Result!

From Russia with love.

P.S. Supper today was actually inedible.

Unexpected, Therefore Fashion

What does this riddle of a title mean exactly? Well, it’s actually pretty simple. When an outfit has an unexpected twist, it leaves the realms of the everyday and becomes stylish, becomes a statement. Breaking the mould is easier than we think.

Take the recent trend of buttoning shirts up all the way to the top. Whereas the preppy Ralph Lauren 3 buttons undone look was once favoured, shirts fully buttoned are now a go to look for women everywhere. This was a new, unexpected twist on the shirt. Unfortunately said look has become so widespread that is no longer falls under the heading ‘unexpected, therefore fashion’. It has had its day, as most trends inevitably do. Fans of this look can keep it up however, simply add a statement gold necklace over the shirt to give it some interest.

6 Shades of Gray

Images of Louise Gray’s collaboration with Topshop have been released and they do not disappoint! The 6 piece collection has been designed to accompany her make up collection for the high street brand and will be in selected stores and online on August 23rd. Not for the faint-hearted, this capsule collection incorporates everything that this particular blogger loves: sequins, pattern and lots of colour. The stand out pieces for me have to be the trousers and the purple and blue dress with stars (below). Here it is in full, enjoy!
